The episode starts off with Joel doing a little banter and introducing the five members of the cast (including himself). I figured I would do the same with the six titles of “Danger on Tiki Island.” It was filmed under the title “Orgy of Blood,” but originally released as “The Brides of Blood Island,” and was also known as “Brides of Blood,” “Brides of the Beast,” and “Grave Desires.”
Man, they weren’t trying with that last one. The others at least sold the Brides, Blood, or Island connection. “Grave Desires” sounds like a boring Victorian romance.
Release Date: June 15, 2010
The many-named film is set on an island in the Philippines where a doctor, his wife, and a handsome young Peace Corps member have arrived to be white saviors. They quickly discover that atomic bomb testing has resulted in the island having weird crabs, a relatively “giant” moth, tentacle trees, dwarf servants, and a lumpy monster that the islanders tie up virgins in the forest to placate. Also, the village has a handsome, mysterious, landowner who could not possibly be the lumpy monster. No way. Not possible.
Some Favorite Riffs:
“It’s always a good thing when you’re headed in the opposite direction of a terrified mob” – Josh
“We learned about crabs from the bikini area in health class” – Mary Jo
“Wow, she is hornier than an early Chicago album” – Trace
“He runs like a kid in a snow suit” – Mary Jo, referencing the monster’s odd movements.
“He taught the village the value of mob rule, that’s good” – Mary Jo
“We totally should have tried this 100 virgins ago!” – Frank, once the villages realize that throwing flaming sticks at the monster is a good deterrent.
Finally, a funeral dirge version of the Hawaii 5-0 theme vocalized by the cast was pretty amazing.
MST3K Injokes: “Hey, it’s wild west Tom Servo!” – Joel, commenting on an oil lamp.
Then Current References: “Sorry about all the smoke. Michael Phelps is in training.” Back in 2009, swimmer Michael Phelps was photographed with a bong.
“It’s like one of Tom Delay’s routines on ‘Dancing with the Stars.’” The former House Majority leader was on DWTS in 2009. He lasted three weeks, dropping out due to stress fractures in his feet.
Other Riffing Connections:
“Star” Kent Taylor was also in Season 1 MST3K episode “The Crawling Hand,” and the first Cinematic Titanic episode, “The Oozing Skull.” He was in “The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues,” which The Mads are Back riffed. He played a doctor in all four. He looks kind of like if you bought Vincent Price from Temu.
Romantic lead (?) John Ashley also had a career that spanned riffing troupes. He was in “Attack of the the (sick) Eye Creatures” and “Beyond Atlantis” on MST3K, and the Rifftrax riffed “Beast of the Yellow Night” and “Frankenstein’s Daughter.”
Director Co-director Eddie Romero also directed “Beyond Atlantis.”
Next up: “War of the Insects”
